Incredible views, an ancient monument, and a haven for wildlife.
Glastonbury Tor is a hill near the town of Glastonbury in Somerset, namesake of the world-famous festival which takes place nearby. St Michael’s Tower sits atop it and is a Grade I listed building. The Tor is noted in Celtic mythology and is even linked to the stories of King Arthur.
The area is home to a wide array of species, partly thanks to the variety of nettles and wildflowers which support a flourishing ecosystem. Visit here in the summer and you may be lucky enough to spot kestrels, swallows, and green woodpeckers.
The Tor is part of the Somerset Levels, which run from the Mendips down to the Blackdown Hills. Because of the low-lying ground surrounding it, you can sometimes see the phenomenon known as a ‘Fata Morgana’, where the hill appears to rise out of the mist.
